I can’t be the only one who likes a wander in the sunshine that “accidentally” ends at a bakery for a treat, am I? Well, luckily, Liverpool is having somewhat of a bakery resurgence with some truly amazing spots for pastries, patisseries, and savoury goods.

As a self-confessed pastry addict, I have done the hard research and here are the 6 best bakeries in Liverpool, in my opinion. If you know of any others that I should check out, or ones in cities across the world that are worth traveling for, leave a comment below!

Lunko, Lark Lane

Lunko on Lark Lane is probably the most famous bakery in the city. It’s super common for there to be hefty queues outside, especially on the weekends, so head there on a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, if you can.

Run by the Butterholic who supplies delicious pastries to cafes and shops around the city, this place is always full of delicious sweet and savoury treats, which slowly become more insane. My go-to here is usually one of their danishes, with a seasonal flavour.

Grab your box and a hot drink, wander down the lane to Sefton Park, and find a spot for an impromptu picnic. Isn’t that the dream?

Mon Petit Chou, Aigburth Road

Located on Aigburth Road, Mon Petit Chou is probably my favourite all-round bakery in Liverpool and is vastly underrated. As the name suggests, they have a huge range of choux buns that have punchy seasonal flavours, however, their savoury danishes are incredible. So much so that when I saw they had the pea and courgette one back on the counter, I sped-walked for 40 minutes to get one.

The cardamom buns here are fantastic, they always have some cool flavour combinations, and the counter just looks like a work of art with the different colours and piping styles. They also run supper clubs, pie nights, and a charity run club that ends at the bakery with a croissant and a coffee.

Pastille, Gibraltar Row

Tucked away in L3, near Costco and Wyld Sauna, on an industrial park, you’ll find Pastille. This is one of the newer bakeries in Liverpool, but they’re already a smash, making a name with their viral Cereal Milk Cruffin and spectacular Pasteis de Natas.

They’ve recently expanded to have indoor seating, which makes it one of the only bakeries on this list that you can actually eat in at. Last time I was there, I went savoury with their Sticky Chilli Cheese Twist, which was incredible, and of course, the obligatory natas. Pastille also do a load of sandwiches too, for something more balanced and substantial.

Wild Loaf, Sefton Street

Another underrated spot is Wild Loaf on Sefton Street, a great spot to hit up before or after a stroll along the waterfront promenade. Given their name, the fresh bread from here is a thing of beauty, as are their focaccia sandwiches. They have a few seats out the front of their shop on nice days, which is a great addition.

While I try to have something different each time I go, the Basque cheesecake here always calls to my partner and me. It never misses, and it doesn’t matter what mood you’re in; that light consistency and burnt caramelised top is just amazing.

Suburbs, Allerton Road

Back in the world of patisserie, it’s hard to exclude Suburbs, a popular bakery on Allerton Road. While the sweet treats are exquisite and packed full of flavour, the showstoppers at Suburbs are the sandwiches that are freshly made with incredible flavour combinations.

One of the best things about Suburbs sandwiches is that they’re also on Uber Eats for delivery if you can’t make it out to Allerton Road. However, for the spectacular pastries, fresh drinks, and colourful salad bowls, you’ll have to head out and sample them all in person.

Rough Handmade, Albert Docks

Arguably, Rough Handmade are one of the older bakeries in Liverpool, having been originally on Penny Lane before moving to its iconic Albert Dock location in 2018. While they have a range of sweet and savoury pastries, Rough Handmade is known for its croissants. These flaky, laminated, buttery delights are a staple on Albert Dock, and it’s a must-buy if you’re on the waterfront.

If you want your bakery fix and don’t want to head out of the city centre, then Rough Handmade is a great shout. I was a regular when I used to work on the docks, and the savoury cheese and tomato croissant was a staple weekly treat.

Have you been to any of these bakeries, or have I missed any of your local favourites? Let me know in the comments below, and I’ll be sure to check them out.
